What Sets The River District Apart?
The River District attracts many with its distinctive shops and boutiques including Janke Book Store, Shepherd & Schaller Sporting Goods, and Evolutions in Design. In 2010, Coldwater Creek joined the mix of main street retailers. The location was chosen in part due to the ambiance and aesthetic appeal of the shopping environment found only downtown. Wausau is the first community of its size to secure a Coldwater Creek store. The adjacent Wausau Center Mall features more than 65 specialty stores including many area-exclusive national retailers such as Gap, American Eagle Outfitters, Bath & Body Works, and Victoria’s Secret. Shoppers enjoy more than 3,500 parking stalls located in the downtown area.
The very unique Third Street Lifestyle Center encompasses two city blocks and is anchored by The Jefferson Street Inn, The Chamber of Commerce, The Central Wisconsin Visitors Center and Coldwater Creek. The Jefferson Street Inn, a luxury boutique hotel and banquet facility, draws over 4,000 visitors monthly to the District.
Commercial tenants in the District include Eastbay / Footlocker.com, United Health Care (UMR), and Nationwide Insurance. The Dudley Tower, an 11-Story office complex constructed in 2007, is home to major financial and law firms, and numerous commercial tenants. The adjacent Eye Clinic of Wisconsin serves 400 patient visits daily.
The place to be in the River District is The 400 Block. Opened in 2011 after a $1.2 million renovation, the city-block-size events park hosts a performance stage, fountain and terraced plaza. It is programmed year round by Wausau Area Events. Each week thousands pack the summer concert series, patronize the famers market and attend events. The Block features an ice rink in the winter.
The 400 Block is the front yard for ARTSBlock, the Performing Arts Foundation’s spectacular venue for the visual and performing arts. This dynamic complex offers Broadway shows at the historic Grand Theater and art exhibits and classes at the Center for the Visual Arts.
The District’s namesake is the Wisconsin River which runs through it. The River Edge Parkway’s four miles of paved trail along its banks provides opportunities for recreation, fitness and commuting, scenic views, and links to parks, a world-championship whitewater kayak course and sites where the City’s history is interpreted through displays including one of Wausau’s original sawmill sites on an island.
